I have used the power of commitment and consistency before and did not even realize it. I saw the study done by Steven J. Sherman done at Indiana University and it reminded me when I was working as an AmeriCorps Vista in the Short North of Columbus, Ohio. One of the events it reminded of was Satellite Gatherings; we used to go out to the community talk to people about our programs and ask them if they would like to attend and would they like to be contacted later regarding the programs. Most of the people said yes and then I saw the power of commitment and consistency in action.
After having a series of Satellite Gatherings we saw the attendance in our program go from about 12 participants to about 80 participants in two months! The way that we were able to do this was simple. We got their numbers at the Satellite Gatherings and called the people two days before the event to invite them that they said that wanted to come out and this was there invite phone call. Now in most cases the reaction to the phone call was not "I am committed to come or that I am forced to come because Brandon asked me" No in most cases the participants were glad that someone thought about them enough to call. Just because I was committed enough to call many of the participants were enough committed to come.
