It hurts my heart that nobody told me this. After spending many of my undergrad years studying history, making myself knowledgeable about the arts it took my roommate, who is a Master of Fine Arts at The Ohio State University, to point out that many people who write poetry professionally do not respect Dr. Maya Angelou as a brilliant wordsmith and some feel that she has received some of her acclaim because she is black and is very passionate writer. Dr. Angelou has never won a Pulitzer prize and one other thing that did it for me was a blog posting about her poem for Micheal Jackson's funeral. My purpose is to inform you so you can make your own opinion. Also many of the people who write poetry professionally are broke and Dr. Angelou is very rich.
